Getting the best burn
The first burn matters most. The first time you light your candle, let it burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the container — usually 2 to 4 hours. This prevents "tunneling," where the candle burns straight down the middle and wastes wax around the sides. Before every burn after that, trim the wick to about ¼ inch; it gives you a cleaner, steadier flame and less soot.
To keep things safe
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Burn on a heat-resistant, level, stable surface, away from anything flammable like curtains, paper, or furniture.
- Don't burn for more than 4 hours at a time.
- Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and debris.
- Stop using the candle once about ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom — burning past that point can overheat the container.
- Keep away from drafts, fans, and vents, which cause uneven burning and smoking.
